Surreal DLC for Atomic Heart
Atomic Heart - Trapped in Limbo is a premium add-on to the cult action game by Mundfish, Atomic Heart. This downloadable content (DLC) pack explores the supposed bad ending of the base game, where P-3 realizes that Charles has been manipulating him all along. His failed last-ditch effort sends his consciousness into a state of limbo.
Set in a mad, surreal state, Atomic Heart - Trapped in Limbo lets you continue the story in a twisted dimension. Expect to throw all logic out the window for an enjoyable first-person shooting experience. Also, check out the alternate exploration with Atomic Heart - Annihilation Instinct.
See if you can escape limbo
Atomic Heart - Trapped in Limbo explores one of the endings for the base game. Major Sergey Nechayev, or simply P-3, decides to bring Sechenov down, leading to a boss battle with the Twins. In the end, Sechenov reveals that it was not he who sent the protagonist into limbo the first time. Instead, he is manipulated by Charles all along, who promptly returns P-3 to limbo.
While the base game is grounded in its storytelling, this DLC is different. It features dream-like sequences and non-logical set designs that are both weird and enjoyable. Expect floating islands, buildings made of unconventional materials, and guns that look like toys. Fret not, since it still offers an intense and fast-paced action experience that is on par with the original. Even the graphics and soundtrack fit well with this world.
The art style is very different, which makes it stand out, although the Candyland-style set designs feel redundant by the final levels. Then, although you have unlimited ammo, the selection of guns can make the game feel restrictive. While there’s only one ending available, it’s enough to make you want for a continuation, or at least to play the other DLCs.
A fun add-on to the main game
Overall, Atomic Heart - Trapped in Limbo is still an enjoyable addition to the Mundfsh flagship title. The concept of P-3’s consciousness in a seemingly random dimension is fun to explore. Set designs and the gameplay rules are vastly different. It has the signature Atomic Heart action, although it fails to capitalize on the potential of limbo as an entirely different dimension.
